A new look for Gmail
We’ve pruned our pixels and made it easier to get to Contacts and Tasks.

Mail, Contacts, and Tasks links have moved to the top left of Gmail.

Compose mail is now a button rather than a link.

A smaller header area puts the first message in your inbox about 16 pixels higher on the screen.

The Select All, None, Read, Unread, and Starred links that used to be above your messages are now options in a drop-down menu, next to theArchive button.

Updates to Contacts
We’ve also done a major overhaul to Contacts, adding a bunch of features you requested and making Contacts easier to use.

Contacts work a lot more like Mail. Keyboard shortcuts now work in Contacts too, and we’ve made selecting and grouping contacts more like selecting and labeling email.

Sort contacts by last name. Look under More actions for this option.

Use custom labels for phone numbers and other fields. For example, you can label a phone number as “Vacation home.” Please be aware, ActiveSync for iPhone and Blackberry Sync don’t yet support custom labels so custom labeled numbers/emails/etc. may not appear on your phone.

Undo. Now, when you make changes to your contacts, you can undo your recent changes.

Automatic saving. You no longer need to worry about “edit” mode or “view” mode — just edit away and Gmail will save your changes.

Structured name fields. You can now set name components (i.e. Title, First, Middle, Last and Suffix) explicitly or continue to use the name field as a free form area if you prefer a less structured approach.

Manual and bulk contact merge. You can now merge contacts from the More actions menu. Just select the contacts you’d like to merge and select Merge contacts from under the More actions menu. Or, to get a list of suggestions for contacts to merge, select Find and merge duplicates.

Today, I have went to Apple of Eaton Centre at Down Town Toronto. Just after called many retailers of Rogers and Fido around the City to purchase the new iPhone 4 that has just launched by Apple in Canada. All of them were sold out.

Fido advised me the only location that still has the item available would be the Apple Store at Eaton Centre, so without losing a min, I went downtown with the hope to buy the new Exotic iPhone. I’ve arrived there around 1:00 PM, where I’ve seen the longest line up ever. Approximate length of line was about 300 meters, it had gone all around the corners. It was very obvious that many of those people in line were there from previous night.

Apple employees where busy by handing out the Pre-made sandewiches, Water and candies to keep the cutomers in good mood. The line were there till 9:00 PM, when there were only few peoples infront of me. It was then that Chris, the Senior manager announced that they have to close the store for the day.

Everything was cool except few factors that made me think about the Big Apple Company.

Instead of handing Sandwiches, water, and candies they could simply save the money and add more employees and Computers where they could serve more customers at once.

They must known the launch day from so long before, so why they didn’t simple made some arrangement for sudden breakdown of their systems, which did happened for their Rogers Channel. Which they had to work so hard to bring it back on.

It was so stupid that, As Chris Advised us: Each activation of Contracts took about 30 min per customer. so you can image what a waist of resources and effort to serve about 1500+ people in line.

The line up hardly moved every 45 min.

They had to record the names incase of Needs twice.

They give out cards which by their definition could save us a iPhone in reserve incase they couldn’t serve us on same day. The card is not a priority for next days, which means if I want to go tomorrow and buy the iPhone 4, I Must Stand In Line all over again [Pffffffffff].

Facebook is winding down its “Gift Shop” feature, the company announced today. Facebook Gifts will stop operating on August 1, although gifts you’ve received previously will remain on your wall.
It’s a surprising move from Facebook, who stands to become a significant player in online transactions thanks to Facebook Credits. Given that gifting is a great advertisement for the benefit of making transactions on Facebook, we can only imagine that giving Gifts is wildly unpopular. Facebook Credits perhaps doesn’t need a helping hand, either: The rapid rise of Facebook games has assured the success of the Credits scheme.

If you’re into gifting on Facebook, you still have a few options: Birthday Cards and Pieces of Flair to name a couple.

Facebook’s Jared Morgenstern says of the closedown:

“Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of the people who have given millions of gifts, but we made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts.

We’ll be able to focus more on improving and enhancing products and features that people use every day, such as Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the ‘Like’ button and the Wall.”

RIP, Facebook Gifts.

FaceBook Gift

The news of the update first leaked out via the agenda of October’s Adobe Max conference, which includes a presentation entitled “Flash Player 3D Future.”

Adobe product manager Thibault Imbert then drew attention to the presentation in a blog post, but declined to give further details, save for the fact that Adobe will release a “3D API” in a “future version”:

“If you are into 3d development for games, augmented reality or just interactive stuff like websites, you just can’t miss the session entitled Flash Player 3D future scheduled for Max 2010 scheduled on October 27 at 11:00AM in room 503. Sebastian Marketsmueller (Flash Player engineer) will deep dive into the next generation 3D API coming in a future version of the Flash Player.

Now you may wonder, what does this means, what kind of 3D are we talking about ? What kind of API ? True textured z-buffered triangles ? GPU acceleration ? Even better ? What I can say is forget what you have seen before, it is going to be big

When this will be available ? We will share plans with you at Max during this session, I tell you, some serious stuff is coming for 3D developers.”

Adobe, it seems, aims to become a platform for 3D content. The idea seems sound, but we’ll await details until we pass judgment. There’s little to go on here.

Apple launched the iPhone 4 last week to a huge groundswell of demand. But the launch was also plagued by complaints from some customers about poor call reception on the device when they held it in a certain way.

The problems have been a hot topic on the Internet, but it is unclear how many people have been affected. The issue does not seem to have hurt iPhone sales so far. Apple sold 1.7 million new iPhones in the first three days.

A putative class action filed Tuesday in the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California against Apple and AT&T — the iPhone’s exclusive wireless carrier in the United States — includes allegations of fraud by concealment, negligence, intentional misrepresentation and defective design.

“The iPhone 4 manifests design and manufacturing defects that were known to defendants before it was released which were not disclosed to consumers, namely, a connection problem caused by the iPhone 4′s antenna configuration that makes it difficult or impossible to maintain a connection to AT&T’s network,” the lawsuit said.

It said Apple and AT&T have failed to provide customer support and customers have been left with only thee remedies: “hold their phones in an awkward and unnatural manner,” pay a 10% restocking fee and return their phones, or pay $29.95 to buy one of Apple’s cases that are said to fix the reception problem.

The iPhone 4 represents a complete redesign over the previous model. A band around the rim of the smartphone acts as its antenna.

The company responded to user complaints last week by saying the antenna performance of every wireless phone is impacted in some way by the how it is held, depending on where the antenna is located.

Apple and AT&T both decline to comment Thursday.

In another purported class action complaint filed on Wednesday against Apple and AT&T, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Kevin McCaffrey and Linda Wrinn said they were sold “defective” iPhone 4 units, which drop calls and data service, “when held in a manner consistent with normal wireless phone use.”

Both suits cite emails reportedly sent from Apple Chief executive Steve Jobs, responding to iPhone customers complaints’ about reception. Those responses were widely circulated on the Internet.

A round of applause for Facebook’s HR department, please. Today, the company announced that it’s managed to hire Marne Levine, who last held the title(s) “Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Chief of Staff of the National Economic Council at the White House.”

Levine, who should remain based in Washington, will now “oversee the company’s interaction with governments and non-governmental organizations around the globe as the company reaches 500 million users worldwide,” according to Cecilia Kang.

That’s bound to be a big job. Dealing with U.S. regulators alone has proven tricky for Facebook at times; handling dozens different approaches to privacy (and propriety) won’t be simple.

Still, Levine seems to be a good choice for the position. Before joining the current president’s administration, she was Director of Product Management at Revolution Money. Prior to that, she was Director of Business Development and Strategy at Cibernet.

FaceBook

Then, to go back even further, Levine once served as Chief of Staff for the president of Harvard, and used to work for the Department of Treasury, too. Which makes for a rather colorful – yet impressive – resume.

It should be interesting to see what Levine can accomplish in her new role.

Brand, Identity, LOGO

A logo is not your brand, nor is it your identity. Logo design, identity design and branding all have different roles, that together, form a perceived image for a business or product.

There has been some recent discussion on the web about this topic, about your logo not being your brand. Although this may be true, I haven’t seen any clarification of the differences between ‘brand’, ‘identity’ and ‘logo’. I wish to rectify this.

What is brand? – The perceived emotional corporate image as a whole.
What is identity? – The visual aspects that form part of the overall brand.
What is a logo? – A logo identifies a business in its simplest form via the use of a mark or icon.

To explain this in more detail, let’s start at the top – the brand.

What is branding?

Apple Brand

Branding is certainly not a light topic – whole publications & hundreds of books have been written on the topic, however to put it in a nutshell you could describe a ‘brand’ as an organisation, service or product with a ‘personality’ that is shaped by the perceptions of the audience. On that note, it should also be stated that a designer cannot “make” a brand – only the audience can do this. A designer forms the foundation of the brand.

Many people believe a brand only consists of a few elements – some colours, some fonts, a logo, a slogan and maybe some music added in too. In reality, it is much more complicated than that. You might say that a brand is a ‘corporate image’.

The fundamental idea and core concept behind having a ‘corporate image’ is that everything a company does, everything it owns and everything it produces should reflect the values and aims of the business as a whole.

It is the consistency of this core idea that makes up the company, driving it, showing what it stands for, what it believes in and why they exist. It is not purely some colours, some typefaces, a logo and a slogan.

As an example, let’s look at the well known IT company, Apple. Apple as a company, projects a humanistic corporate culture and a strong corporate ethic, one which is characterised by volunteerism, support of good causes & involvement in the community. These values of the business are evident throughout everything they do, from their innovative products and advertising, right through to their customer service. Apple is an emotionally humanist brand that really connects with people – when people buy or use their products or services; they feel part of the brand, like a tribe even. It is this emotional connection that creates their brand – not purely their products and a bite sized logo.

For a more thorough understanding of branding, in simple terms, I recommend Wally Olin’s: The Brand Handbook which I quote is “an essential, easy-reference guide to brilliant branding”.

What is identity design?

Cola Brand

One major role in the ‘brand’ or ‘corporate image’ of a company is its identity.

In most cases, identity design is based around the visual devices used within a company, usually assembled within a set of guidelines. These guidelines that make up an identity usually administer how the identity is applied throughout a variety of mediums, using approved colour palettes, fonts, layouts, measurements and so forth. These guidelines ensure that the identity of the company is kept coherent, which in turn, allows the brand as a whole, to be recognisable.

The identity or ‘image’ of a company is made up of many visual devices:

A Logo (The symbol of the entire identity & brand)
Stationery (Letterhead + business card + envelopes, etc.)
Marketing Collateral (Flyers, brochures, books, websites, etc.)
Products & Packaging (Products sold and the packaging in which they come in)
Apparel Design (Tangible clothing items that are worn by employees)
Signage (Interior & exterior design)
Messages & Actions (Messages conveyed via indirect or direct modes of communication)
Other Communication (Audio, smell, touch, etc.)
Anything visual that represents the business.
All of these things make up an identity and should support the brand as a whole. The logo however, is the corporate identity and brand all wrapped up into one identifiable mark. This mark is the avatar and symbol of the business as a whole.

What is a logo?

IBM Logo

To understand what a logo is, we must first understand what it is for.

A logo is for… identification.

A logo identifies a company or product via the use of a mark, flag, symbol or signature. A logo does not sell the company directly nor rarely does it describe a business. Logo’s derive their meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolises, not the other way around – logos are there to identity, not to explain. In a nutshell, what a logo means is more important than what it looks like.

To illustrate this concept, think of logos like people. We prefer to be called by our names – James, Dorothy, John – rather than by the confusing and forgettable description of ourselves such as “the guy who always wears pink and has blonde hair”. In this same way, a logo should not literally describe what the business does but rather, identify the business in a way that is recognisable and memorable.

It is also important to note that only after a logo becomes familiar, does it function the way it is intended to do much alike how we much must learn people’s names to identify them.

The logo identifies a business or product in its simplest form.

Summary:

Brand –The perceived emotional corporate image as a whole.
Identity – The visual aspects that form part of the overall brand.
Logo – Identifies a business in its simplest form via the use of a mark or icon.

How much money have people around the world wasted on Apple products in the past year? One website estimates that number is as high as $29 billion, and it’s rapidly climbing.

Perhaps “wasted” is too strong a word, but don’t blame us — we’re just quoting the source. (This just-for-fun site isn’t affiliated with Apple, and since its estimates are based on data from a variety of sources, we can’t absolutely confirm the veracity of these numbers. Still, for those of us on Team Android, the premise is entertaining and makes for good fanboy-teasing fodder).

With today’s launch of the iPhone 4, we expect that any estimate of iPhone sales will continue to rise throughout the day. Regardless of the fact that the iPhone 4 is known to have hardware malfunctions, including discolored displays and faulty antenna bands, folks just keep lining up to buy the newly released device.

Of course, the iPhone 4 isn’t the only revenue-generating mobile toy that’s quickly lining Apple’s coffers with the hard-earned dollars, euros and shekels of fans around the world. The iPad’s sales recently topped 3 million units.

But the one item that’s still outselling them all is the humble iPod, which ships more units and wastes more consumer dollars than any other device, including Macs.

Here’s a breakdown of our annual Apple waste in U.S. dollars as of today:

$1.3 billion wasted on iPads

$7.4 billion wasted on iPhones

$7.8 billion wasted on Macs

$9.5 billion wasted on iPods

We’re sure Steve Jobs is thrilled. How much do you think we’ll have wasted on Apple by the end of this week? How much have you personally wasted, either on the newest products from 2010 or over your lifetime?

At WWDC, Apple formally announced FaceTime, its take on video calling and a feature that really highlights to dual-cameras on the iPhone 4. The big surprise with FaceTime is that it only works over Wi-Fi (for now) but will let you make free video-to-video calls to other iPhone 4 users all over the world.

While video calling is hardly new — technology and telephony companies have been trying to shove the stuff down our throats since at least the 1960s — the implementation certainly is. While it’s far too early to make any hard or fast predictions about FaceTime and video calling in general, we have to say, after spending some time with FaceTime, we’re impressed.

I had my first FaceTime call within about 15 minutes of getting home with my iPhone 4. I’ve had several subsequent chats throughout the afternoon and I have to say, each time, it seems less and less like a novelty and more and more like a really natural way to communicate.

Drop-Dead Simple to Use

While video chat over web cams using services like Skype or iChat or Windows Messenger is a pretty common activity, video calls from handsets remains a rarity. And not for lack of trying. I can think of at least half a dozen failed attempts at selling video calling to consumers at the retail level from the last decade, and that’s just off the top of my head.

While video calling has lots of hurdles, one of its biggest is ease of use. Making sure each party has matching or compatible handsets, confirming that the video stream is active, making sure the microphones are shielded so you don’t have echo and interference, and that’s before you even make the call.

FaceTime is extremely, extremely simple. Just click on a contact in your address book and make sure that you have their iPhone 4 phone number as one of the contact points. Then hit the FaceTime button on their entry. That’s it. The phone will make its connection over Wi-Fi and on the other end, your friend will receive a call and an alert that you are requesting a FaceTime chat. As soon as they accept, they are dropped right into the video interface.

That’s it.

From that point, you can talk directly to your screen, where you will see the person on the other line, as well as a small image of your own camera. One of the coolest features it that you can seamlessly switch to the higher resolution camera on the back of your phone to take someone on a video tour or show them what you are looking at. You can also rotate the phone and have the video image update itself automatically.

This is the way video calling should be. No messing with settings, no worrying about making sure the camera is on or active, just choose FaceTime from your contact’s page. If you’re already on a voice call with someone on their iPhone 4, you can switch to a FaceTime chat mid-call and you won’t even use any of your voice minutes.

As of 11:45 a.m. ET, the update, which Apple said earlier this month would be delivered today, was not yet available via iTunes. Apple updated iTunes to version 9.2 last week to make the software compatible with the new mobile OS. Several iPhone owners on Apple’s support forum claimed that they had been told by Apple support personnel that the iOS 4 update would launch at 10 a.m. PT.

Apple is headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., in the Pacific Time zone. Computerworld was not able to confirm the reported launch time; Apple’s telephone lines were swamped with calls, with wait times that exceeded 30 minutes. The timing would match what Apple did last year when it rolled out the then-new iPhone 3.0 on June 17 shortly after 1 p.m. ET. Owners of 2008′s iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod Touch, and 2009′s 3GS and third-generation iPod Touch, will be able to download the free iOS 4 upgrade today.

iOS 4 will not be available to users of the first-generation iPhone or iPod Touch, both which debuted in 2007. Previously, Apple has dinged iPod Touch owners $10 for major operating system upgrades, but an accounting change last year now allows it to provide iOS free of charge. Apple previewed iOS 4 — formerly called iPhone 4 OS — last March. Two weeks ago, Apple CEO Steve Jobs touted the operating system’s new features, including multitasking, folders and a unified e-mail inbox.

The new iPhone 4, which will have iOS 4 pre-installed, is scheduled to go on sale Thursday, when Apple’s retail stores open at 7 a.m. Apple, AT&T, Best Buy and Apple’s other U.S. retail partners quickly exhausted their pre-order inventories of iPhone 4s last week, when both Apple’s and AT&T’s ordering systems collapsed under the strain. Apple later apologized for the fiasco. Gregg Keizer covers Microsoft, security issues, Apple, Web browsers and general technology breaking news for Computerworld.
Google has announced that it has completed the rollout of Google Caffeine, the new and improved web indexing system that now powers the world’s largest search engine.

In August of last year, it was revealed that Google was working on a new version of its search engine. The project, dubbed “Caffeine,” was initiated in order to create a faster, more accurate indexing and search system. It was also meant to better handle rich media and real-time content.

It’s been a while since we heard about Caffeine, but today Google says that Caffeine is live on its servers.

Here’s how indexing on Google Search now works, according to the technology giant:

“Our old index had several layers, some of which were refreshed at a faster rate than others; the main layer would update every couple of weeks. To refresh a layer of the old index, we would analyze the entire web, which meant there was a significant delay between when we found a page and made it available to you.

With Caffeine, we analyze the web in small portions and update our search index on a continuous basis, globally. As we find new pages, or new information on existing pages, we can add these straight to the index. That means you can find fresher information than ever before—no matter when or where it was published.”

With content being generated faster than ever, the changes make sense. The Bing threat is still there as well, making it imperative for Google to remain ahead of the game with its search technology. You may not notice the changes in the individual searches you make, but it’s very likely you’ll feel the impact of Caffeine in the days, months, and years to come.

One of the most exciting announcements from WWDC today was iOS 4, the iPhone’s new operating system.

The OS, which contains around 100 new and upgraded features, will be rolled out with the new iPhone 4 next month, and it will also be available as a free software update on earlier devices, including the iPad, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and second and third generation iPod touch with 32GB or 64GB storage.

In his keynote address, Steve Jobs chose to highlight a select few of the iOS’s new features, including multitasking, iBooks, advertising and file management. But there wasn’t enough time to cover all the upgrades and improvements. Some of iOS 4’s features that slipped under the radar include app gifting, wireless keyboard support and many others.

We first learned about iOS 4 back in April. At that point, we knew multitasking would be coming to the iPhone “in a way that doesn’t hinder performance or battery life.” Today, Jobs confirmed and demonstrated services such as Pandora and navigation running in the background while other apps were also running in the foreground.

Two other hotly anticipated upgrades for iOS 4 are the Mail app’s major facelift and the all-new app organization functionality.

Now, users can organize their iPhone apps into separate folders for better organization and easy access. iOS 4 will be able to manage up to 2160 applications on a device. Folders will feature the familiar drag-and-drop functionality that Apple device users know and love.

Email on the iPhone is also getting a major overhaul in iOS 4. You’ll be able to view messages from all your accounts in a single, integrated inbox. Messages will be threaded, and you’ll be able to open attachments using third-party apps, as well.

Apple made some significant announcements for multimedia functionality, too. iOS 4 will support custom playlist creation for iTunes, tap-to-focus video, 5x zoom for camera functions, and a Photos feature called “Faces and Places,” which allows users to sort and view photos based on where they were taken and who appears in them.

Finally, applications can now be gifted to friends and family, the background wallpaper on your home screen can be easily changed, a spell-checker has been built into Mail and other apps, and Bluetooth-enabled wireless keyboards will now play nicely with the operating system.

The most important element that enforce every web owner to create a unique website is to have traffic. Today everybody from bloggers, e-commerce web owners to small informative web page are doing their best to drive most traffic to their website, and that is not only cause they need the viewer to read their articles or purchase an item from their online website, but also they need traffic to prove their royality to the famous search engine, Google Inc.

As traffic goes up the Google’s crawler increase your ranking in search results (organically). Better ranking is made through day and night pampering your website.

The following are few helpful hints to keep your website on top of your competitors

- Traffic

Traffic is great, but sudden hit of traffic can raise eyebrow. There are planty different methodes available through paid or free services that provide you with analysis of your website’s traffic with specific details.

The deepness of the data provided to you depends on the service provider. After monitoring your Entrance and Exit sources, it is easier to plan a right path for future benefit.

Traffic is important and you must be able to find the sources to direct it into your system and drive them through your content like sales person. Content must be prepared in great quality so it creates joy in your visitors. Traffic must be increased on straight upward line, not sudden over one night hit.

- Bounce Rate

Have you ever noticed when you hand in some candy to kids they’ll get back to you in no time, with ear to ear smile on their face, why don’t you try that with your visitors. Provide them adulthood candy, such as e-mail subscription where they can receive discount coupons, or other sorts of online marketing.
Did you know by increasing time on the site, you can basiclly help to drop bounce rate.

“Definition of Bounce rate - It essentially represents the percentage of initial visitors to a site who “bounce” away to a different site, rather than continue on to other pages within the same site.

Bounce Rate = Total Number of Visits Viewing Only One Page / Total Number of Visits

- Link Back

Creating link back to your site is another great way to advise the crawler, how famous you are between other websites. But have this in mind having a real estate web site and link back from drug mart, will not help you but also damage your ranking as well. So you need to have a related website whom are doing business in same industry to promote you by linking back to you. this can be easily get done through directory submission. We can help you in this if you like, the copyrighted and key word arranged paragraph will be sent to as many as 100 to 5000 directories through slow submission, where it won’t hurt your ranking.

- Social Network

Social Network is another great source of driving traffic. Submitting specific article or page from your site to for instance Facebook, can get influenced by your friends, and their friends, and entire members. or even twitter can help you to get into specific subject and make others to re-tweet your line follow by short URL.

- External Physical Tools

Magazine, Billboard, and other external sources can be used to drive traffic. but ALWAYS ALWAYS have this in mind, don’t throw your money into garbage by producing an advertise banner which has a lot on it, where the view get lost in the subject of the ads.
Always try to transfer the minim amount of data with your advertise.
Also make sure to have some sort of big Fish Net, where when the visitor enters your website, stick to one of your returning instruments. “One time Visitors won’t do any good for your website”.

The above was the most important factors that i could think of, you can subscribe to my e-mail notification (Kid vs. Candy), or follow my Twitter (/MarlooMedia), Facebook Fan page (Facebook Page).

On many websites now, you can create an avatar to represent you. An avatar is basically a caricature that you can tweak to look as much like you as possible, without being an actual picture. As you chat or send emails, the people with whom you are communicating will see your avatar. When you are talking to someone whom you have never met, it helps them get an idea of what you look like.

YouTube Logo & Identity

Your avatar, however, is not you. It is only a representation of you.
Keep that thought in mind as you embark on starting a business. One of your primary goals will be to create a corporate identity; to establish what your business is in the business world. At some point, you will also create a logo for your business. These two things (corporate identity and logo) are not the same thing, though they are often considered as such. Let me explain.

Corporate Identity

Your corporate identity is your business. Everything that is projected by your business, taken as a whole, is your corporate identity. Every image that your company projects, every ad that you design, every catalog printing that you distribute, every booklet printing that you send out in your company’s name: all of this makes up your corporate identity.

Whenever a customer thinks of your company, the image that he or she sees is, to that person, your corporate identity. Every decision you make, from the most important to the most mundane, contributes to your overall corporate identity. It is not something that is created overnight, but is instead cultivated throughout the life of your business.

In the example of the avatar above, your corporate identity is you. Your logo, however, is like the avatar. It is only a representation of you.

Logo

Your logo is only a part of your corporate identity. If you have a good logo, then customers will think of it when they think of your company. They will immediately recognize your logo. Still, it is only a part of the overall image of your company, which is your corporate identity.

Your logo, if designed correctly by a professional company, is your corporate identity all wrapped up into one little image. Through colors and fonts and design features, your logo is made to project the purpose and drive of your company. It is supposed to convey all of these things to customers, simply by being on a sign or on the pages of your catalog printing.

Your corporate identity is something that you have to constantly work on and revise. You must always be conscious of how you are perceived on the market. Your logo, however, is designed with these things in mind, but is then left to do its work. You will likely want to change your logo from time to time, but for the most part it remains static.

Do not let your customers confuse your logo with your overall identity. The logo is only a small part of the big picture.

Google Vs. Apple

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has confirmed that his company is developing a tablet device based on the Android operating system, according to friends that spoke to the executive at a recent event in Los Angeles. The New York Times reports that Google has “been working with several hardware manufacturers,” and “hopes to make its own apps marketplace available for new slate-like devices.”

Although Google is yet to publicly announce such a device, many signs point to its likely launch. For starters, Google has been rumored to be developing a slate device with HTC – the same company it brought Nexus One to market with – since January. Moreover, the company has already announced plans for an e-book storeexpected to launch within the next few months.

It’s also clear that Google has plans for Android that go way beyond phones. There’s already an Android-powered car on the way, as well as plans for what’s being called “Google TV.” While Chrome OS for netbooksis also expected by year-end (and there are rumored Chrome tablets too), an Android tablet now seems imminent.

A move into tablet devices would also further Google’s growing competition with Apple, who just released theiPad. Many other companies are also expected to join the tablet race this year, and just last week, it was reported that Nokia was developing its own device.

To print out a document, you rely on your local operating system, which must have a driver installed for the printer you intend to use. Most of the time, it’s not an issue; at home, you probably have one printer and all of your PCs have the required drivers.

Things get a bit more complicated when you want to print something from a mobile device, like an iPad, or from a laptop based on Google’s Chrome OS, which relies entirely on web apps and services. This is why Google is working on Google Cloud Print, a service that enables “any application (web, desktop, or mobile) on any device to print to any printer.”

Google Cloud Print is still in the early days of development, but Google made the code and documentation public as part of the Chromium and Chromium OS projects. The documentation reveals how Google plans to solve some of the issues it will inevitably face, such as making Cloud Print work with legacy printers.

“The ideal experience is for your printer to have native support for connecting to cloud print services. Under this model, the printer has no need for a PC connection of any kind or for a print driver. The printer is simply registered with one or more cloud print services and awaits print jobs. Cloud-aware printers don’t exist yet, but one of our main goals in publishing this information at an early stage is to begin engaging industry leaders and the community in developing cloud-aware printers and the necessary open protocols for these printers to communicate with cloud print services.

“We want users to be able to print to legacy printers via Google Cloud Print. This is accomplished through the use of a proxy, a small piece of software that sits on a PC where the printer is installed. The proxy takes care of registering the printer with Google Cloud Print and awaiting print jobs from the service. When a job arrives, it submits the print job to the printer using the PC operating system’s native print stack and sends job status back to the printer.”

There are obviously some obstacles ahead, but it’s an amazing idea. If print jobs are handled in the cloud you won’t need drivers, and most of the problems users have with printing from devices like smartphones and tablets will be solved.

a bonafide hands-on with the purported iPhone 4G. Over the weekend, photos emerged of what is believed to be the next generation Apple iPhone, but Gizmodo actually managed to acquire the device in question.

Apparently a hapless (and presumably now former) Apple employee left his prototype iPhone 4G or iPhone HD in a bar in Redwood City. The device, made to look like an iPhone 3GS, is presumably an early version of the next-generation handset.

While some remain skeptical that this is in fact a version of the final device, we think this is indeed the real deal. It’s even recognized by iTunes as an iPhone, although Gizmodo can’t get the phone to actually work:

According to the person who found it, this iPhone was running iPhone OS 4.0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement. The person was able to play with it and see the iPhone 4.0 features. Then, Apple remotely killed the phone before we got access to it. We were unable to restore because each firmware is device specific—3GS firmware only loads on 3GS devices—and the there are no firmwares available for this unreleased phone. Which is another clue to its authenticity.

Here are some of the specs (which interestingly enough, align with much of what we’ve been hearing):

Front-facing camera

Better back camera

Micro SIM card (like the upcoming iPad 3G)

Better display

Split volume buttons

Physically, the phone is different too. Take a look at this comparison shot.

Starting today, Google Chrome and Firefox 3.6 users can drag and drop attachments into Gmail messages without hassling through the slow, kind of annoying manual file upload. Gmail has also increased their support for Google Calendar with a new Invitation feature.

Drag-and-drop support allows you to simply attach a file into Gmail composition window by dragging the file from an open window into it. There’s not much to it beyond that, but it’s an incredibly handy feature to have.

Google Inbox View

Also, provided you have permission and access to view other people’s Google Calendar, you can now view them when sending out an invitation. Under the subject field in Gmail, there’s a new Invitation link to invite other people to an event. You can check your invitee’s availability without going into Google Calendar to compare times. When you’re finished, a preview of the invitation will appear in your email message. After you send the email, the event’s automatically added to your calendar and your friend’s calendar.

Google Inbox View

It’s a good day to be a Gmail user.

Coach

American offers Wi-Fi on several dozen flights and will have more than 150 planes with Wi-Fi by the end of the year. Southwest is testing Wi-Fi on four planes, through Aircell rival Row 44, and plans to add more service later this year.

Air Canada and United have no Wi-Fi access but have contracted with Aircell to add it later this year.Continental and U.S. Airways won’t disclose any specific Wi-Fi plans. JetBlue, surprisingly, is also a laggard.
Our roving reporter was lucky enough to catch up with Bill and ask him why Microsoft had made this astonishing announcement. Bill had the following to say on this subject…

“In the first place we were happy that they (Apple) deployed iTunes to Windows; we got a lot of new customers just because of that one app, but, then we heard from an inside source that they (Apple) used the EXACT SAME code-base for iTunes Mac as for Windows.

On closer inspection we noticed that iTunes didn’t even use the real windows API! They make their own scroll system and their own chrome COMPLETELY bypassing our fantastic Windows OS. So, we’ve decided enough is enough. We’ll allow iTunes back into Windows when they (Apple) make the following changes.

* Apple MUST write a specialised version of iTunes on Windows and use Windows compilers and Windows languages ONLY
* Apple MUST use native windows controllers such as our in built Windowing system and scroll objects.
* Apple MUST lose this RIDICULOUS attitude of writing code once and deploying to multiple operating systems. Just don’t go there.

If they (Apple) can follow those few simple rules, then we (Microsoft) will be happy to allow them back on Windows.”
